War Links — Alive in Baghdad; Lt. Ehren K. Watada

February 5th, 2007 | ACTIVISM, Alive in Baghdad; Lt. Ehren K. Watada (Video), VIDEO POSTS |

Maybe it’s the physical proximity, but too often I feel detached from the chaos and the bloodshed in Iraq, when really U.S. involvement was and is funded entirely by my and your tax dollars. To wake up, and to hopefully gain a more honest perspective about what is happening, I feel obligated to find more sources in order to better understand what is really going on.

Below is a site that for me has brought such a fresh perspective: first-hand accounts from Iraqi citizens. In the spirit of learning, please feel free to comment and share other sources you’ve found that might deserve more attention.

  • Alive in Baghdad is a weekly videoblog of interviews with individual Iraqis, footage of daily life, as well as short news segments. Embedded below is a recent video which includes non-soundbite interviews with car bomb survivors.

Not completely related, but newsworthy:

  • Court martial proceedings today began against Army Lt. Ehren K. Watada, who refused to ship out, citing opposition “to the continued war in Iraq, the deception used to wage this war, and the lawlessness that has pervaded every aspect of our civilian leadership.” His original video statement:

It is an absolute shame that we have to dig for a real perspective on what is going on over there. That in itself, I believe, is an indictment on both the Government and the major media outlets. One doesn’t surprise me, the other should be better than that.
